Hoolie’s joints had gotten ahead of themselves in forecasting snowfall for the next day, but timing was a minor detail. If Zach had learned anything by living, it was that pain gave all kinds of warnings. Live with it, learn from it, make preparations. Once Betty had been delivered to those in need—Kevin’s observation—Zach moved on. One misstep didn’t put him on the bench, out in the cold. He wouldn’t be able to pay for the cow until he could get back to doing what he was good at, but he had other ideas, and he had a team ready to help him make short work of the first one on his list. And when it was finished, the whole team—shoulder to shoulder—headed for the house. They hung their coats, scraped their boots and searched for the two people they most wanted to please.
“We’ve got something to show you girls,” Hoolie announced as they threaded around the bottom of the stairs and down the hallway.
“And it’s wicked cool,” Kevin piped up.
“And we’re just in time.” Zach reached Sally’s open bedroom door first and found the women poring over some chart on the computer screen. “Because it’s about to get wicked cold.”
“We’re going outside?” Ann gave Sally a solicitous look. “Are you—”
Weariness melted from Sally’s face. “Damn right, I am. Wicked rules. It’s what I live for.”
The sky’s heavy burden hung so low that Zach itched to reach up and poke a hole in the sack just to see what would come out. He might be sorry later, but the tension begged to be busted wide open, and busting—that exquisite instant when all hell broke loose and heaven was on the line—was irresistible. If he only had the reach.
Hell, maybe he did. Leading his little procession in one barn door and out the other, he was feeling that good.
“You moved the water tank?” Ann asked.
“We remodeled the water tank,” Zach said as he halted at the corner of the building and gestured expansively.
“Zach designed it,” Kevin said. “Hoolie came up with all the materials.”
Zach’s gesturing hand landed on the boy’s shoulder. “Every inch between the tank and the box is insulated, thanks to Kevin’s hard work.”
“We wanted to get it done today, but we didn’t take shortcuts. It’s solid.” Kevin fairly skipped around the newly boxed-in tank toward the south side. “And you’ll love this part, Miss Drexler.” He ran his hand over the glass facing affixed to the wooden surround. “Passive solar energy. I got passive right on the vocabulary test after we talked about passive solar energy in class. Like you said, wave of the future.”
“And the future is now,” Ann recited with a smile.
“Plus, we used stuff you already had. Not recycled, but repurposed. Like you said.”
“Sounds like quite a lesson,” Zach said.
“The interesting stuff sinks in,” said Kevin. “Right, Hoolie?”
“Sure looks like it.”
Zach moved behind Ann, put his hands on her shoulders and steered her toward a different view. “It wasn’t easy, but we moved it around for maximum southern exposure.
